Peret Mako – The Devil’s In The Detail

The Devil’s In The DetailPeret Mako

By Aidan Roberts

This is a fairly satisfying, though somewhat passive record. In this release from indie label Future Classic, local electronic man Peret Mako has carefully crafted an album from the inside out, each blip, pad and warm sweep meticulously monitored and measured, polished into what we have here, a collection of moody and gentle soundscapes. The texture overall is serene, almost polite, though there are a few groovy moments which showcase Peret’s clear hip-hop and traditional house influences. Some happy interludes include some Tracey Thorne-esque guest vocals from Tania Bowra, and a solid trilogy of pieces woven together in the penultimate track People, Places and Things… Downloads. On one level this album is thoroughly adequate as an exploration of style; it’s tidy and well-formed, ticking the right boxes for mastering the textures of the deep house bliss-out. So it is a pleasant listen, but perhaps not capable of reaching beyond the chill-out level of intrigue. Maybe that’s okay – but for this listener, it’s hard to find the devil in the detail.
