Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras have officially announced their theme for the 2027 festival: “HYPERBLOOM”. Accompanying the announcement was the release of the official dates of Sydney’s iconic rainbow season, which will run from 12 February – 7 March.

“HYPERBLOOM is an invitation to let everything within us come alive,” read the official announcement. “Louder in our joy, deeper in our love, prouder in our bodies, and a force to be reckoned with. When one of us lets more of ourselves show, someone else sees another way to be. That’s how a bloom becomes a HYPERBLOOM.

“Whether you’re taking to the streets for the iconic Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade or bringing your brand, business, community group, or cause to Fair Day, now is the time to bring your wildest vision to life. Part nature, part nightlife, all larger than life, whoever you are and whatever you’re becoming, make it spectacular. There’s plenty to get excited about, so don’t miss your moment!”

It follows this year’s festival theme of “ECSTATICA”, which was preceded by “Free to Be” in 2025. The bestowing of a theme upon the event is a tradition that can be traced back to 1979, the second ever Mardi Gras. Just one year after the historic protest that saw 53 arrested, the 78ers returned a full 3000 strong, marching down Oxford Street under the theme “Power in the Darkness”.

As part of the announcement, Mardi Gras have also officially opened expressions of interest for participation in both their 2027 Parade and Fair Day. Those interested in marching down Oxford Street will have until 17 September to lodge their EOI, and are encouraged to incorporate the 2027 festival theme into their floats. As for would-be Fair Day stall-holders, EOIs close on 18 September.
