The Inner West suburb of Burwood has been listed among the world’s coolest neighbourhoods, as ranked annually by Time Out.

One of the hottest food destinations in Sydney, Burwood came in at number 16 on the list, beating out Naples’ Quartieri Spagnoli and Bencoolen in Singapore.

It was also miles ahead of the only other Australian neighbourhood recognised, North Melbourne at number 24.

Time Out says they carefully survey its network of writers and editors across hundreds of cities, who then rank every neighbourhood against criteria such as culture, community, liveability, nightlife, food and drink, street life and ‘nowness’. Essentially, they’re looking for the places that manage to represent the souls of the cities, while still maintaining their own, local character.

Ultimately, it looks like Burwood really shone based on the rich and varied cuisine you can find on its streets. Earlier this year, Burwood council claimed that it was the country’s fifth most diverse community, and while the status isn’t quite official, visitors have their pick of Japanese, Malaysian, Thai, Turkish, and Vietnamese meals.

However it’s the town’s significant Chinese influences that really deliver the goods, with Burwood Chinatown, the Night Markets, and the February Lunar New Year celebrations all getting a special shout out.

Burwood’s still bustling when the sun goes down

A significant nightlife also helped the suburb’s chances, something recently recognised by thee state government. Special entertainment precincts are set to come into place later this year, allowing bars, clubs, and restaurants to trade until 2:00am on Fridays, Saturdays, and on public holidays, and letting outdoor dining to stay open until 11pm.

Initially introduced in 2022, the first special entertainment precinct was opened along Enmore Road in an effort to revitalise Sydney’s nightlife. The move was so successful that the council moved to make the rules permanent in 2024.

“We’re incredibly proud to be named the 16th coolest neighbourhood in the world and the No 1 in Australia for 2025,” said mayor, John Faker.

“Burwood is Sydney’s cultural playground, a place to eat, play, live, and celebrate the rich cultural offerings of our diverse and vibrant community.”
