Sydney Swans Coach Responds To Team’s Involvement In Recent Sexual Assault Investigation

Dean Cox, coach of the Sydney Swans, has spoken following a sexual assault investigation involving number of the AFL team’s players. Responding to questions from the Swan’s HQ Tuesday morning, Cox proffered few details beyond his disappointment.
“Obviously, [I’m] extremely disappointed with what’s happened and I understand the questions, and we’ll update as we gather more information,” Cox said. “We’re working our way through everything with the AFL and relevant parties, and we’ll update when we get more information.”
It comes after Victoria Police opened an investigation of a report of sexual assault in East Melbourne on August 17. Police alleged the incident occurred at a hotel on Wellington Parade in the early hours of the morning, the same hotel which played host to the Sydney Swans’ celebratory drinks following the team’s win against Essendon at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday.

According to Sydney Morning Herald, the masthead contacted the representatives of Sydney Swans Players Isaac Heeney, Riley Bice, James Jordon, and Chad Warner, all of whom are assisting with inquiries, though not confirmed to be under investigation. A fifth, unnamed player is also reportedly involved, though has yet to speak to police.
This follows a confirmation from Swans chief executive Matthew Pavlich on Monday afternoon that several of the team’s players have been linked to the alleged incident, though in what capacity remains unknown to the public.
“We’re still piecing together exactly what’s transpired here and have our own set of internal inquiries ongoing,” Pavlich told reporters. “But safe to say that we’re extremely shocked and disappointed that this has taken place and that the players have found themselves in this situation.
It is unclear what the Sydney Swans plan to do ahead of their match against North Melbourne on Sunday. Though no players have yet to be charged, the Swans will be required to name their extended squad by Thursday evening.
