THE TENDER AGE

THE TENDER AGE

Sexting, naked self-portraits, and borderline child pornography taken by children themselves are some of the controversial issues Carriageworks’ Tender Age explores. Inspired by such public scandals as the infamous lie detector test with a 14-year-old rape victim on the Kyle & Jackie O Show, co-director David Williams said the play is invested in how young people negotiate relationships in the contemporary world.

“It’s one of those moments where our culture has to stop and look at itself and say, ‘Oh my God, what have we become?’” Williams explains. “We’re trying very hard to capture the kinds of conversations young people have when adults are not present.”

In the technological age of smartphones, social media and teens with 24/7 online access, the effect of what was once just adolescent mischief can now have devastating consequences. But amidst such daring and confronting issues, Williams promises a highly entertaining show.

“We do have confronting elements but it’s also a lot of fun. There’s stuff that’s ridiculous and silly and funny, and whilst the concern of the project is serious, it’s not a dry piece of educational theatre. We want to be genuine and realistic, but we also have some serious fun.”
