Shoreside mansion to be bathed in heritage glory

The recently restored ‘Bellevue’ mansion on Blackwattle Bay has been entered into the National Heritage Awards in a bid to preserve Sydney’s past.
Originally designed in 1896 by local architect Ambrose Thornley Jr., the Victorian home has undergone a $1.32 million restoration after almost being demolished by developers. Local community members lobbied against the move at the time, saving the historic site.
The restoration marks the completion of Stage 3 of the City of Sydney’s $15 million redevelopment of Glebe Foreshore.
The National Heritage Awards will be announced at a presentation lunch on April 7, with the ‘Bellevue’ in the ‘Build Heritage Project over one million dollars’ category.
