“Unfortunate” Error Forged Onto Sydney Marathon’s 2026 Finisher’s Medal

An “unfortunate” error has been permanently forged onto the finisher’s medal for this year’s Sydney Marathon. On the medal’s back face, a panoramic illustration of Sydney’s skyline circles the outer edge, however, where Moore Park’s Allianz Stadium should be, an iconic German arena has found itself instead.

The error was spotted after the 2026 medal was unveiled ahead of the August 30 event, with online spectators identifying Munich’s Allianz Arena posing as one of Sydney’s landmarks. Internet users quickly theorised that the designer had intended to represent Allianz Stadium in Moore Park, but mixed the names up during a search for reference photos. 

Now, the medal’s design features the distinct tessellating diamonds adorning the dome of Munich’s Alliance Arena instead. Meanwhile, First Nations artist Ambrose Killian, whose artwork adorns both the front face of the medal and the lanyard, clarified he played no part in the error made on the back face of the medal.

Sydney Marathon’s Response

The incident quickly became viral, leading Sydney Marathon to announce the medal would not be changed, and that the mistake, while “unfortunate”, was not worth running from.

“A little too much international flavour has found its way onto the back of the finisher’s medal, with an incorrect depiction of the stadium. With the event a week away, this is the medal our finishers will receive. It’s a beautiful medal, and now a little more unique. What it represents doesn’t change. 

“Behind every one of these medals is months of early mornings, long runs and quiet determination, and having it placed around your neck at the Sydney Opera House is a moment our participants will never forget. Whether it’s a first marathon or a seventh Major, every person who crosses that line has earned something no detail in the artwork could ever take away.”

Sydney Marathon went on to thank its participants and partners for taking the mistake in such good humour, and have declared their focus has returned to “where it should be”: delivering a safe and unforgettable weekend for the 40,000 people lining up on Sunday. 

The 42.4km marathon will take runners from North Sydney across the Harbour Bridge, down Oxford Street all the way through to Kingsford, before concluding at the Sydney Opera House.
