Longer Travel Times Of Up To 14 Minutes Following Sydney Trains Service Changes
Transport for NSW has announced major changes to Sydney trains, with more services, but increased journey times of up to 14 minutes.
From 15 November 2026, the changes will affect the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line, the T8 SYD Airport & South West line, the South Coast train line and the T2 Leppington & Inner West line. St Peters and Erskineville stations will also be affected, moving into the T4 line.
These changes to Sydney trains are part of a record $2.1 billion investment by the Minns Labor Government to improve service across the network, which Minister for Transport John Graham said was “neglected” under the former government.
“People living along these lines haven’t seen a significant service upgrade in over a decade. They deserve better and now they’ll get it,” said Graham.
The T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line will see more frequent services, including citybound trains every 4 minutes at Sutherland up from 5 minutes and every 3 minutes at Hurstville up from 3.5 minutes, during the morning peak period.
The T4 line will also have trains coming every 7.5 minutes during peak periods at several stations including Kogarah, Oatley, Miranda and Cronulla, a 33% increase.
More frequent services will also hit the T8 SYD Airport & South West line with trains coming from every 6.5 minutes to every 4 minutes during peak periods between Green Square and Wolli Creek. However, passengers will no longer be able to access Sydenham, St Peters, Erskineville and Redfern Stations via the T8.
Major Changes To Sydney Trains Airport Access On The South Coast Line
Passengers who rely on the South Coast line to get to the airport will have to adapt their journey as airport connectivity via Wolli Creek is being removed. From next month, South Coast trains will bypass Wolli Creek, and then terminate at Central instead of running on to Bondi Junction.
Passengers are recommended to instead take the South Coast line to Central and swap to the T8 SYD Airport & South West line to the airport.
However, the South Coast line is also getting over an additional 200 weekly services, and peak services between Wollongong and Sydney CBD will have trains coming every 15 minutes, instead of 20 minutes. Off-peak and weekend services will be doubled, with trains coming every 30 minutes, up from the current 60 minutes.
On the T2 Leppington & Inner West line, weekday daytime services will be extended from Homebush to Parramatta, providing an all-stops services between Parramatta and the CBD every 15 minutes.
“If you rely on the T4, T8 and South Coast Lines this timetable change you will get you more trains, shorter wait times and a more reliable service,” Graham said.
Minister for the Illawarra and the South Coast Ryan Park said, “these timetable changes go a long way to ensuring more reliable and more frequent services for the region, making it easier for people to get where they need to go.”
