The Shawshank Redemption Stage Production To Begin Australian Tour In Sydney

The acclaimed stage adaptation of The Shawshank Redemption will begin its Australian tour at Sydney’s Theatre Royal from 2 January 2027, bringing the celebrated story of hope, friendship and resilience to audiences in a live theatrical production.

Based on Stephen King’s novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, the stage adaptation follows Andy Dufresne, who is wrongly convicted of murdering his wife and her lover and sentenced to life imprisonment at Shawshank prison. Inside the prison, Andy forms a friendship with fellow inmate Red while navigating corruption, hardship and the challenges of incarceration.

The production has been adapted for the stage by Owen O’Neill and Dave Johns and is directed by David Esbjornson, who previously directed the Australian tour of Driving Miss Daisy featuring Angela Lansbury and James Earl Jones.

Producer Craig Donnell said the production’s themes continue to connect with audiences around the world.

“We’re honoured to bring this extraordinary story to Australian stages and share an unforgettable theatrical experience with audiences across the country.”

The production is designed as an intimate theatre experience, placing audiences close to the action as the story unfolds live on stage.

Donnell said the production aims to create a lasting connection with audiences.

“The Shawshank Redemption is one of those rare stories that continues to resonate across generations, a story of hope, courage and perseverance.”

The Australian season follows an acclaimed UK tour, with performances also scheduled for Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide. Following its Sydney opening at Theatre Royal, the production will continue to the Playhouse at Arts Centre Melbourne from 4 February 2027, Regal Theatre Perth from 12 March 2027 and Her Majesty’s Theatre Adelaide from 1 April 2027.
