This May, the Art Gallery of New South Wales will be featuring a performance exhibition that brings together choreographer and dancer, Shelley Lasica’s remarkable understanding of movement, colour, audience, and architecture.

Lasica’s major work, When I Am Not There, will be performed over the course of 14 days, featuring eight performers including herself. The performance explores themes of absence, presence and memory through the experimental dialogue between choreography and elements of visual art, fashion, theatre and literature. It exemplifies Lasica’s career-long efforts to examine what it means ‘to perform’ and ‘to exhibit’.

Lasica’s work has been co-commissioned by Monash University’s Museum of Art (MUMA) and the Art Gallery of NSW. The piece was first performed in Melbourne were it was the first exhibition of its kind, celebrating and reflecting on 40 years of Lasica’s disciplinary choreographic practice.

WHEN I AM NOT THERE will be an exciting new experience for our audience and signals the Art Gallery’s embrace of the full spectrum of contemporary art,” said Michael Brand, the director of the Art Gallery of NSW.
