A man has been arrested after a woman was stabbed in the carpark of a gym in Sydney’s inner city on Wednesday afternoon.

Police were called to a gym on O’Riordan Street in Alexandria at about 12:50pm following reports that a man, believed to be in his 40s, stabbed a 39-year-old woman.

She was treated by paramedics at the scene for serious injuries to her neck, ear and back, and taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

Detective Superintendent Rodney Hart called it a “targeted attack” – the man and woman were believed to have been in a “very short domestic relationship”.

The man reportedly used a kitchen knife to carry out the attack before escaping in a 2006 grey Ford Focus hatchback with the number plate AYQ14W.

Police immediately established a crime scene, which included the shoes and bag of the woman who was attacked, and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

At about 7:50am on Thursday morning, a 45-year-old man presented himself to Dee Why Police Station where he was subsequently arrested and taken to Manly Police Station.

Charges are yet to be laid.

Premier Chris Minns described the stabbing as a “horrifying and shocking attack”, identifying the wave of domestic violence incidents an emergency for the state.

“It would be every woman’s worst nightmare to be in that situation, particularly somebody that has taken out an apprehended domestic violence order,” he continued.

“It’s important to say these events are not rare, either. They are common. The number and frequency of domestic violence incidents in NSW represents an absolute emergency in the state.”

The incident comes as the state focuses on solving knife crime and domestic violence after a spate of high-profile crimes.
