A 33-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly stabbing a police officer in the head multiple times in Sydney’s CBD.

On Sunday afternoon, around 1.15pm, the man approached two police officers on traffic duties on Park St and Castlereagh St, near Sydney’s Hyde Park.

“[The man] stabbed the male constable in the back of the head a number of times,” Detective Superintendent Martin Fileman said.

“The injured officer and a female officer then gave chase along Park Street off to Hyde Park near Elizabeth Street, where assisted by other police officers, that offender was arrested.”

The attacker was tasered before being arrested, demanding that police shoot him.

Superintendent Fileman said the knife remained in the man’s hand until his arrest.

The officer was treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries before being taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital, where he remains in a stable position.

The 33-year-old has been taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for further assessment. He was reportedly known to the police for minor offences, and remains under police guard.

The alleged offender also had “no history of mental illness”, according to police databases.

Superintendent Fileman further assured that the stabbing was an “isolated incident” and that there was no further threat to the public.

The attack comes just under a month after the horrific stabbing rampage at Bondi Junction, and the stabbing attack on Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel at Wakeley church a few days after.
