Alli Butler is either completely delusional or a late-blooming prodigy. While most people would say it’s the former, Butler intends to prove it’s the latter with her Sydney Fringe solo show, 40-Year-Old Popstar.

Butler is a singer, songwriter, actor, comedian, director and producer and is desperate to add “popstar” to her resume. She sensed she should pursue stardom when her nursing career nose-dived because she realised she lacked decision-making skills and had no passion for the work.

In all seriousness, Butler is an accomplished artist with lots of runs on the board: she writes, records, and performs her own songs, and has supported artists such as Sarah McLeod, Bertie Blackman and Paul Capsis; she has appeared on a number of TV shows and in several stage musicals. Butler has previously taught music, and has also written and produced comic and dramatic videos for an ever-growing online fanbase.

40-Year-Old Popstar is a memoir within a comedy riff within a rant about motherhood, love, art, nursing, not nursing anymore, and what Butler is and isn’t prepared to do to become a popstar. She is prepared to share her songs, make people laugh, be honest about her life and career, and strive to entertain. She isn’t prepared to depilate any part of her body, lie about her age or compromise her values at any price (it must be the right price).

Butler’s show was a sell-out hit at the Perth Fringe in 2020 and at every other venue where it’s been performed nationally. She brings 40-Year-Old Popstar to Sydney Fringe as part of her bid to conquer the Eastern seaboard.
