Police Confirm No Shots Fired As Search Continues For Armed Man In Dulwich Hill
Police say no shots were fired during an incident in Dulwich Hill on Friday morning, correcting earlier reports of gunfire as officers continue searching for a man believed to be armed with a shotgun.
The search prompted road closures, instructions for residents to remain indoors and disruptions to light rail services through Sydney’s Inner West.
Superintendent Despa Fitzgerald, from Inner West Police Area Command, said witness accounts and examination of the scene had found no evidence of a shooting.
“The witnesses and also the crime scene examination, as we’re going through it now, there is no indication of shots being fired,” Fitzgerald said in a press conference this afternoon.
Police were called to a carpark on Williams Parade about 10.20am on Friday 16 October following reports of a stolen vehicle.
Officers were told a man had been inside the vehicle with a firearm before allegedly setting it alight and leaving on foot. Police said he was last seen on Union Street.
Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze, with no injuries reported.
Fitzgerald said a group of people had reported being threatened by a man carrying a shotgun as they attempted to leave.
“They were threatened with a weapon as they were trying to leave the area,” she said during the press conference.
“Stay indoors”
Specialist police, PolAir and the Dog Squad have been involved in the search. Armed police were urging residents to stay indoors, and other to immediately leave the area. Nearby schools reportedly introduced lockdown procedures.
Police described the man as being of Caucasian appearance, aged in his 20s, about 160cm tall, with a thin build and shaggy hair. He was last seen wearing a blue T-shirt and long black pants.
A crime scene has been established, with local road closures in place and motorists asked to avoid the area.
Light rail services between Dulwich Hill and Lilyfield were suspended during the operation, with passengers advised to make alternative travel arrangements.
Police have urged anyone who sees the man to call Triple Zero and avoid approaching him.
Investigators are also seeking mobile phone and dashcam footage from the Dulwich Hill area. Anyone with information should contact Inner West Police Area Command or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
