Inner West To Host Free Socceroos v Türkiye World Cup Screening This Weekend

Football fans rejoice! You’re all invited to gather in the Inner West this weekend for a free community screening of Australia’s FIFA World Cup clash against Türkiye.

Inner West Council will broadcast the match live on a big screen at Camperdown Memorial Rest Park in Newtown this Sunday, giving locals the chance to cheer on the Socceroos together in one of the area’s most beloved spaces to hang out.

The free event will run from 2pm to 4pm, with residents encouraged to bring picnic rugs or low chairs and settle in for an afternoon of football in the park (and get there early to nab a good spot).

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said the screening continues Council’s tradition of hosting major community events around significant sporting moments.

“Inner West residents love to get behind our national teams, and this live screening is a great opportunity to come together and support the Socceroos,” Byrne said.

While Australia and Türkiye battle it out on the field, the focus closer to home will be on bringing the locals together, with Council expecting football supporters, families and Inner West residents to gather throughout the afternoon.

The event follows the success of Council’s public screenings during the Matildas’ World Cup campaign, which drew large crowds and created a festival-like atmosphere across the Inner West.

Organisers say the goal (pun intended) of this weekend’s World Cup screening is to offer a similarly welcoming and inclusive environment, with space for football fans of all ages to enjoy the match together.

“We saw an incredible turnout and atmosphere during our Matildas World Cup live screenings, where the community united in support of the team,” Byrne said.

“We’re excited to build on that energy and create another memorable experience for local fans.”

“The atmosphere at this live screening will be electric. Football fans from across Sydney are welcome to join us to cheer on the Socceroos to victory,” Byrne added.

The Australia v Türkiye screening will take place at Camperdown Memorial Rest Park on Church Street, Newtown, from 2pm on Sunday 14 June. Entry is free.
