Sydney’s New Year’s Eve celebrations are set to be bigger and brighter than ever, with exciting plans revealed by Lord Mayor Clover Moore.

Sydney is gearing up for a stunning display of celebration and fireworks that will light up the harbour and mark the start of the new year in spectacular fashion.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore announced plans for the long-awaited event, which will include over 20 minutes of fireworks at 9pm and midnight.

Sydney’s New Year’s Eve to Start with a Bang

“Sydney New Year’s Eve is a wonderful celebration of our multicultural, harmonious, safe and inclusive community, and it helps us promote Sydney and our stunning harbour setting to the world,” she said on Thursday.

“As one of the first cities in the world to ring in the new year, we set the benchmark with a spectacle that reflects what our beautiful city is all about.”

This year, nine tonnes of fireworks will be launched from eight floating platforms and 80 new positions along the Harbour Bridge, creating a 7km display of lights from Cockatoo Island to Point Piper.

Over 26,500 lights, including LED lights on boats and spotlights on barges, will also add to the festive celebrations.

The fireworks will also pay tribute to Barangaroo, a key Cammeraygal woman, with visuals and projections honouring her and her warriors’ connection to the water.

The Lord Mayor explained that Sydney’s New Year’s Eve celebration plans have been in development for 15 months, with thousands of hours dedicated to every detail, from programming and creative elements to safety, transport, and coordination.

“More than 1000 accredited personnel work together to ensure Sydney shines in all its splendour on New Year’s Eve,” she said.

She also highlighted a significant increase in the number of women contributing to the event, noting that technicians, producers, directors, singers, and other creatives have spent more than a year preparing for a night that will feature an extraordinary display of fireworks, pyrotechnics, lights, and music.

“From ages six to 79, women have been the force behind Sydney’s New Year’s Eve celebrations this year,” she added.

New Year’s Eve’s Smoking Ceremony

The highly anticipated New Year’s Eve event will begin at 7:30pm with a smoking ceremony, as three Tribal Warrior vessels depart from Barangaroo headland, journeying around Circular Quay and concluding at the Sydney Opera House.

At 8:30pm, a Welcome to Country will be presented by Yvonne Weldon AM on behalf of the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council.

Then, the 9pm fireworks will light up the sky for eight minutes, accompanied by projections on the Harbour Bridge pylons that illustrate Barangaroo and her female warriors’ connection to the water and fishing.

The display will be set to an exclusive soundtrack by rapper and producer Nooky, featuring the voices of his daughters, Olivia and Calula.

At midnight, a combined human and AI-generated reflection of Barangaroo will be projected onto the water. The vision will depict her as a shapeshifting being, morphing from coral to kelp, fish to octopus, and finally into water, moving to the rhythms of the ocean in a choreographed dance.
