WRECKING

Opening at The Old Fitzroy Theatre in Woolloomooloo, the very suburb which only nine years earlier, was the real-life stage of a brutal homeless bashing, Wrecking explores the issues of homelessness and the unbeknown similarities between Sydney’s richest and poorest inhabitants. “Inspired by the true events of 2003 I unearthed powerful stories that blend what can be described as the union of the raw, beautiful and bizarre,” playwright Dan Giovannoni explains.

The play examines the precise moment when passions collide and seemingly disconnected lives interlock. “There is something recognisable in all of the stories,” says Giovannoni, listing love, brutality, disappointment and desire as pivotal features.

“In the intimate venue at the Old Fitzroy we have the opportunity to breathe the stories of our city,” says director, Gin Savage. Actor Paul Blenheim adds, “It will definitely get people thinking about their own neighbourhood … to really localise a problem that’s quite universal.”
