WHARF REVUE: RED WHARF BEYOND THE RINGS OF SATIRE

WHARF REVUE: RED WHARF BEYOND THE RINGS OF SATIRE

From John Howard as Yoda to Julia Gillard as Mary Poppins, this year’s Wharf Revue lampoons everyone from the Liberal Party and Gina Rinehart to Cardinal George Pell and Bob Carr.

Red Wharf: Beyond the Rings of Satire opens with a carbon tax song, then moves to a Star Wars-themed sketch which stars Tony Abbott as Darth Vader, singing a camp version of Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive.

With 12 sketches and a finale, the 90 minute production is a fast-paced ride through the issues of the day – same sex marriage, illegal immigrants, environmental impacts and of course straight-up politics.

Julia Gillard as Mary Poppins and Bill Shorten as Bert the chimney sweep singing, “Just a mere glance at Julia makes the government go down, will not be forgotten, with fantastic performances by Amanda Bishop and Josh Quong Tart.

This one is for political enthusiasts and lovers of satire, with a healthy dash of the musical added in.

Until Nov 25, Wharf 2 Theatre & until Dec 22, Wharf 1 Theatre, Sydney Theatre Company, Hickson Rd, Walsh Bay, $35-60, 9250 1777, sydneytheatre.com.au
