Two Many Chefs – REVIEW

It’s been said that laughter is the best medicine and if that’s the case movie-goers should continue to enjoy happiness and well-being long after watching this infectiously hilarious comedy from Spain.

The synopsis reveals a simplistic yet relatable story about the importance of family, which was destined to be a good quality crowd-pleaser owing to the delightful ensemble cast, competent writing, and direction.

The story surrounds Mikel (Enric Auquer), a young chef in Bilbao with high ambitions of winning his third Michelin Star. He’s fighting his own demons owing to a prank he made as a child which caused his father’s restaurant to go bankrupt and his alleged suicide.

TWO MANY CHEFS film still

When his father Juan (Karra Elejalde), who was a highly respected chef, suddenly re-appears out of the blue 30 years later Mikel tries to reconnect, but owing to his ailment with amnesia Juan’s mind is stuck in 1990 believing that his sons are really just children.

Does Mikel ultimately find solace for his actions as a child and does Juan have his memory restored? More importantly does Mikel have a hidden agenda in allowing his father to work at his restaurant?

Overall, this is a well-crafted comedy which has ticked all the right boxes. The amnesia storyline is what initially propels interest and ultimately draws the crowds in hook, line, and sinker. The ensuing storylines which involve his astonishment at things in the world of progress which he’s never seen before also compound the laughter.

And what would a comedy be without a romance to flourish between the pivotal characters? Megan Montaner serves as the love interest of Mikel, a doctor who aids in retrieving Juan’s memory and finds love in the process.

This is a feel-good comedy which was a major box office hit when screened in Spanish cinemas. Audiences may also find themselves being drawn into fine dining restaurants shortly after attending screenings of this movie, as there are many scenes which display deliciously mouth-watering delicacies in the world of high cuisine.
