We all know juggling a casual job while you study can be challenging. However, if you want to enjoy financial freedom or have some extra spending money while you pursue higher education, a job on the side can be incredibly beneficial.

Right now young people are busier than ever, so if you are having trouble managing your schedule, here are some tips on how to cope with work and study at the same time.

Good communication

When it comes to work and uni, your degree comes first, so be upfront with your boss about your university commitments. Have a chat with your boss when you begin your job, making sure to outline your school timetable and assessment or exam dates.

It’s important to give your employer plenty of time to get prepared for when you might need to work less, so you can study or complete assignments. This way you can be stress free leading up to important dates knowing your boss is well informed and up to date with your other commitments.

Organisation is Key

Have a detailed outline prepared for all the important dates throughout your semester. This will be invaluable when you are doing casual work, so you can update your availability accordingly. When busy weeks are on the horizon make sure you update your work roster to fit with university, giving yourself plenty of extra time to study and maintain your mental health.

Rest and Relaxation

Having a busy schedule while getting your degree is hard on any student. It’s important to remember that everyone needs some time to themselves during the week. Try leaving some space in your schedule for some old-fashioned self-care, like reading a trashy novel or going on a walk.

In the long run, sacrificing an extra hour of work or study to catch up on sleep is going to be invaluable in keeping yourself on track to succeed while avoiding burnout.
