THEATRE: THE KURSK

THEATRE: THE KURSK

This stage production follows the true story of Admiral Popov and his quest to save the Russian nuclear submarine, The Kursk, from disaster when it became trapped on the ocean floor. Rescue attempts were made by foreigners, but the stubborn and suspicious Admiral didn’t make it easy for them. The pressure was immense with both lives and reputations at stake. Acclaimed Australian actor, Eugene Gilfedder – he has graced stages for 28 years – plays the role of Admiral Popov. He was attracted to the character and story because it had remained fixed in the global consciousness since it occurred in 2000. He said it was through this character we feel much of the overwhelming frustration and responsibility for the rescue mission. Eugene also described the play as a, “docu-drama” as every detail of the Admiral’s actions was researched by the playwright, Sasha Janowicz. However, he said the reason for the character’s distrust of foreigners wasn’t straightforward. “This would take some telling and requires a description of the complicated events emerging from the Kursk’s accident,” Eugene said. “Suffice to say that the admiral was forced into a diplomatic agreement in order that the rumour of foreign involvement was put to rest.”
