Cirque du Soleil Returns to Sydney Stages With ‘Corteo’

The world’s most daring and creative circus performance Corteo returns to Sydney in 2025.
Known for the acrobatics and gymnastic performances, Cirque du Soleil’s show Corteo debuts a newly revised performance across Australia. The show premiered in 2005 and was remounted in 2018 after its highly anticipated global success.
As Corteo returns to Australia’s stages, performances amongst gymnasts, contouring artists, and musicians set the stage for a show that is known for its charming and illuminating creativity.
Known for an array of different acts, performers from across the world are gathered together to tell the story of times most treasured circus Corteo.
Performing at incredible feats, the beloved Russian performer Roman Munin dances upon a 15-foot free standing ladder. Telling the story of a clown named Mauro who imagines his funeral as a parade with angels looking down upon him.
The performance is centred around his character’s disability utilising metaphors of his ladder to bridge a connection between heaven and earth.
Using his performance and character identity to display an act of unjustified love and companionship through a series of gravity defying acts.
Story of Corteo explores what it means to be human
His performance does not stand alone, as his act encounters several other performances which tell the story of Corteo. Through a circus and theatre display, the performance conveys energetic celebrations, high reward action, and a narrative which explores the protagonist’s farewell.
Each performance builds upon childhood, comedy, love and nostalgic fantasies, creating a performance of wonder and melancholy.
The story conforms to a dreamer clown that envisions his own funeral and reflects upon his life in a ponder of joy. Circling around his past, he is met with past characters in his life, but it makes him question if it was all a whimsical dream.
From synchronised dancing to acrobatic performers swimming amongst the air, director Daneil Finzi Pasca assembled all areas of theatre and circus to portray the beauty of humanity.
Corteo contrasts human experiences, highlighting the strengths and fragility of being human. Through fantastical romanism, scale, comedic whimsy and spectacle, the audience is confronted with every moment of the human experience.
Returning to Australia, Corteo will be performed at Qudos Bank Arena from the 4th to the 14th of September in 2025.
