THEATRE: STEEL MAGNOLIAS
In a Louisiana beauty salon, six southern women – Truvy, Annelle, Clairee, Shelby, M’Lynn and Ouiser – gather in preparation for a wedding. As hair is styled and nails manicured, they talk about relationships, babies, and neighbourly gossip. More importantly, they provide each other with comfort and support, although in a very sarcastic manner.
As time progresses they continue to come together in the salon. When tragedy occurs, it is these friendships that provides the strength for each to survive the pain.
Considering the success of the 1989 film, which starred some of the biggest actresses in Hollywood (such as Julia Roberts and Shirley MacLaine), another production of this play seemed needless and uninspired.
Surprisingly, these fine Australian actresses transcend these expectations to make the roles their own. This is especially true for Geraldine Turner, playing the eternally grumpy Ouiser and Jennifer Hagan as smart-mouthed Clairee. The timing of their cynical quips is spot on, creating numerous moments of hilarity.
Despite not being new or thought provoking, Steel Magnolias has an big heart, making it one of the best productions currently showing.
