THEATRE: SHORT+SWEET WEEK 3
It’s not the size that matters but what you do with it. That was certainly the case as Short+Sweet, the self proclaimed ‘biggest little play festival in the world’, rolled into its third week at the Newtown Theatre. In ten minute spurts on a stage constantly transformed by new sets, we were treated to, amongst other themes, love in all its forms – love pursued, love won and love lost. Lifetime by New Zealand writer Angie Farrow explored the life of an entire love affair through a whirlwind of situations, masterfully told with a procession of props. I Want To Be A Miracle, a monologue written and performed by Natalia Ladyko, delved into the influence of male role models in one woman’s love life, while Double Take by Rose Cooper was a hilarious take on the perils of singles bars, helped along by excellent writing and acting. The fourth week of Short+Sweet starts on 27 Jan with ten new short plays, including an HR dilemma in Parting Shot by Lucy Thackeray and a look at what happens when two toothbrushes have to part when their owners do in A Toothbrush Tale (We’ll Always Have Peach Tiles) by Anika Herbert. Short+Sweet will continue at the Newtown Theatre with a new batch of shows starting each Wednesday until Feb 27. Three weeks of Short+Sweet will also run at the NIDA Playhouse from Feb 9.
