THEATRE: ROMMY

Other reviews surmise Nick Coyle’s latest venture as, “A girl from the future meets two old sisters in a sewer. She’s lost her memory and they’ve gone bonkers.” The undercurrent of the plot is much more morbid. Death, purgatory, isolation and loneliness seem to be recurring themes in Coyle’s repertoire that are cleverly delivered to the audience through humour and a well-crafted script. Coyle’s tension between whimsy, hilarity and the dark side is reiterated through the set design which perfectly illustrates a black, dank, subterranean world. The rumble of Kings Cross train station in the background adds to the mise en scene, which is otherwise created by the ingenious use of garbage bags. A stand out of the all female cast was Fluke (Janie Gibson) who I am dibbing to be the next Cate Blanchett. Catch her before she morphs at the Old Fitzroy Theatre.
