THEATRE: MY NAME IS RACHEL CORRIE

THEATRE: MY NAME IS RACHEL CORRIE

This one-handed play is based on the life of 23-year-old Rachel Corrie, who had a vision of global peace and social justice.

The play begins with Rachel waking up and recounting the story of her life. Swinging between seriousness and satire, she also ponders her relationships and the origins of her philanthropy.

Then, in 2003 Rachel travels to Palestine and Israel and she experiences the horrors of war while attempting to help those affected. Through letters and journal entries, she provides us with her observations on life, death and humanity as she moves toward a tragic end.

Despite an enthusiastic and believable performance by Belinda Bromilow in delivering Rachel’s philosophical soliloquies, it isn’t enough to make you really care. This probably comes back to the structure and design of the play itself. The lack of interaction, movement and sound combined with its reliance on non-stop dialogue stifles the story and by the end, you will pray for her silence.

Until June 20. The Seymour Centre, Cnr Cleveland St and City Rd, Chippendale. $20-34, 9351 7940 or seymourcentre.com.au
