THEATRE: MATE

THEATRE: MATE

BY KOMI SELLATHURAI

If the script for MATE had been made into a Hollywood screenplay with overpaid, hyper-tanned, talentless actors, my two hours in Belvoir theatre would have made a little more sense. I have been more entertained and intellectually challenged just starring at a brick wall.

Mate is a faithful dog to clueless painter Jim who has just been dumped by his materialistic girlfriend. As Jim goes through the motions of pain, insecurity, unexpected fame and danger, Mate sits by boss’s feet and eventually saves the day.

Now, kudos to the actors who played the roles of the dogs, especially Katie Robertson who is the cutest human pup I have ever seen. Her thoroughly-researched observations shone in her performance, which was a much-needed breath of fresh air in a stinker of a play. There was lots of barking on stage but absolutely no bite.

Until 13 Feb. Belvoir St Downstairs Theatre, 25 Belvoir St, Surry Hills. $23-$29, 9699 3444 or www.belvoir.com.au
