THEATRE: LADY GREY

The presser for this Australian premiere doesn’t push it in your face. Instead, it asks a few friendly questions: “Do you like vocal chords? Do you enjoy trembling? Do you have time for a story or two? Some vivid images of waving wheat fields, quiet violence, and a version of love?” Why yes, I do, thanks. That sounds lovely, in a fairly abstract, not-telling-you-anything-about-the-show kind of way.  Upon further investigation it turns that this is a one-woman show where the ordinary and everyday is revealed through poetry and wit for what it really is – wild, energised, marked with deep pain and fierce joy. But that’s about all they’re revealing. It seems we need to trust in the brilliance of Brooklyn playwright Will Eno (in Australia for Inscription, a series of play development master classes), director, Julian Meyrick and star, Tanya Burne. After hearing that “…if hearts could speak, they would sound like Eno writes”, I know I’m suitably intrigued.
