THEATRE: 11 AND 12

THEATRE: 11 AND 12

11 and 12, is a play about power, religion and conflict. Seasoned director Peter Brook brings to life the true story of Tierno Bokar, a Sufi sage caught up in a violent struggle over a seemingly inconsequential religious feud. A petty disagreement over the meaning of the numbers eleven and twelve, starts a chain of events in the heart of colonial Africa which leads to devastating consequences and the death of an entire village. Set in a small town in Mali during World War II, the narrative explores the timeless issues of religion, politics, understanding and prejudice. The play’s underlying message of tolerance is reflected in a multicultural cast including African, French, Spanish, American, Palestinian and Japanese performers. Based on a novel by the great African writer, Amadou Hampaté Bâ, 11 and 12 was adapted to the stage by Marie-Hélène Estienne, in a process that spanned over three decades. After sell out crowds in Paris and Madrid, Peter Brook is bringing 11 and 12 to Sydney for the only Australian season of this production.
