The Resistance: a new type of theatre

Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) and Auckland Theatre Company will present Kip Chapman’s innovative new work, The Resistance, and exploration of youthful righteousness and rebellion.

The story centres on a group of teens who have attended a climate justice rally, each with their own personal agenda. When one of them is unexpectedly thrown into the spotlight, it suddenly provides the group with a bigger platform and more possibilities.

Friendship, ambition, and potato chips are tested under these new circumstances.

What really makes The Resistance different is the way it will be performed; it puts a new spin on audience interaction.

The Resistance is going to be super fun and like nothing people have seen before. The whole space is going to be transformed into a giant immersive environment and it’ll be up to each audience member to choose how much they want to be involved,” explains writer and director, Kip Chapman.

“They can volunteer to be involved in the action or they can sit comfortably in their seat and watch the madness unfold. I can’t wait to see how different it will be every night. Each audience has the chance to affect the experience and it’s this mix between the audience and the performers that makes this type of work so memorable.”

Diya Goswami, Lakesha Grant, Thea Sholl, and Jack Walton are the young ATYP actors who play the protestors. They’ll share the stage and imbibe the wisdom and experience of industry alumni, Genevieve Lemon and Jo Turner.

This is an exciting new kind of theatre that is funny, ambitious and absolutely relevant.
