THE HISTORY BOYS

THE HISTORY BOYS

Alan Bennett’s The History Boys is a coming-of-age comedy about a class of young men and their slightly strange path to adulthood. It’s a fantastic, fun and witty play, and the Opera House production, starring John Wood as the boys’ teacher Hector, doesn’t disappoint. Admittedly, in the current climate, it was a little off-putting to watch a story with heavy undertones of paedophilia being treated in such a lighthearted manner. But that’s part of what makes the play so interesting – times have certainly changed, but growing up remains as confusing and confronting as ever, and The History Boys captures that brilliantly.
