THE COMING WORLD
The Coming World opens with a young couple, Dora and Ed, canoodling on a beach in New England, America. Set in the 1990s when the world is on the brink of being overrun with technology, what follows is a tragic love triangle based around Dora; Ed; and Ed’s more successful twin brother, Ty. This is not the type of story that will enthral audiences from the get go and you’ll need to put in a bit of work and patience to reap the benefits of this well-written script by Pulitizer award-winning, Christopher Shinn. Director, Caroline Craig, alongside movement director, Samantha Chester, have both done a good job with the fluid, emotive movement and blocking of the play. But the real highlight is the acting by AFI-nominated Cheree Cassidy (Packed to the Rafters, Underbelly) and Ian Meadows (Underbelly, Paper Giants: The birth of CLEO). The two WAAPA graduates have completely nailed the Boston accents (and it’s a fun accent to listen to) and they’ve injected some energy and vibrancy into this slow, sad story.
