STORIES I WANT TO TELL YOU IN PERSON

A psychic in New York City once told playwright Lally Katz that she was cursed, a disturbing thought for anyone, so she gave them a lot of money to lift the curse hoping it would fix the things she thought were missing from her life. It was an odd experience that eventuated in the evolution of one-woman show, Stories I Want To Tell You In Person.

Originally Katz was commissioned by Belvoir to write a play about the global financial crisis, it turns out that being cursed was much more interesting.

Director Anne-Louise Sarks went on a mission back to New York with Katz to visit even more psychics and help her figure out the direction of the show. “We went together for a follow-up,” explains Sarks. “Though we did the visits separately to see if what they were saying was in common with us both.” Being a sceptic, she wasn’t sure what to expect. “Psychics are really good at reading people and that is a skill,” Sarks muses. “People always like them more when they are telling things you want to hear.” Whether the psychics were legitimate or not is yet another story. “It’s funny, I don’t know the truth of it,” says Sarks. “Which is a change from being cynical.”

Stories I Want To Tell You In Person promises to be a truly personal, often revealing and very funny performance. It’s an intimate chat with Lally Katz, as well as her first time centre stage, as she shares the stories she could only tell you in person. (LL)
