Love it or loathe it, nothing gets people talking quite like pole dancing. Is it the ultimate form of empowerment for women, or sexual objectification to the extreme? Is it an Olympic sport, or just tacky, glittery showiness? Who knows. One thing is certain though – pole dancing is a force to be reckoned with. Pole Evolution Dance Company, Sydney’s first and only pole dance company, will return to CarriageWorks this month to present Spiral Rhythms – a show that celebrates movement, music and dance, through a unique fusion of pole dancing with classical ballet technique, raw contemporary dance and pure gymnastics. The Pole Evolution Dance Company was born from the desire to place pole dancing in a non-competitive, artistic arena. Encouraging its dancers to experiment with all forms of movement, the Company seeks to redefine what society perceives to be ‘pole dancing’ through dynamic dance and entertainment experiences, challenging our preconceptions, and entertaining with incredible skill along the way.
