SCHOOL DANCE

SCHOOL DANCE

It’s the 80s and Matt is in high school. He has spent the last nine months building up the courage to ask his crush to the school dance. But something is happening to him and the rejection is taking its toll. Matt is starting to disappear and soon he will be invisible. Can his geeky friends save him?

“Invisibility in our show is a black lycra sparkly onesie,” says actor and playwright Matthew Whittet. “It’s sad but exciting and stupid at the same time.”

This partly autobiographical work was a sell-out hit at the 2012 Adelaide festival and won the prestigious South Australian Ruby Award for Best Work. After its Sydney run the show will go on to Melbourne Festival, Brisbane and Sydney

“It’s kind of fantastical and goes back to this special notion of teens throwing themselves into fantasy to avoid reality. This show is built for anyone who is 14 and anyone who has ever been 14.”

Whittet describes the play as relevant, heartbreaking and hysterical. “Hopefully audiences will takeaway a more open perspective of what theatre can be,” he continues. “For us there’s a joy that comes from doing this show – that is a gleeful childish joy that tended to rub off on the audiences.”
