“We have a level of expertise that your average bottle shop does not have, simply because we’ve been around for as long as we have,” says Jim, owner of Pyrmont Cellars. Operating as part of the Porters Liquor franchise, the store has been maintaining the spirits (and wine and beer) of local residents for almost 25 years.

The store particularly prides itself on its extensive range and knowledge base when it comes to wine.

As well as having a wide selection of domestic and international wines of all varieties on its shelves, and being able to source many more, Pyrmont Cellars operates Sydney Wine Centre.

Located above the store, Sydney Wine Centre provides wine tasting and wine knowledge courses delivered in a fun, friendly environment.

Pyrmont Cellars also holds tastings within store on most Fridays and occasional Saturdays. They can include anything from new beers and spirit labels, to sparkling wines and popular reds and whites.

At various times of the year, you can find themed gifts and products in the store: Christmas in July (and Christmas in December!); Halloween; Easter, Valentines Day and so on. You can come in and talk to Jim about putting together special gift packs, or just ask his advice on what to give.

If you’re planning a party or big event you should come and chat to Jim about how to cater. Pyrmont Cellars is a one-stop shop that supply most of your party needs, too.

“We have all the regular things you would expect in a bottle shop with the add-on advantage of having the ability to know and to judge and to gauge our customers’ wants and needs,” says Jim.

On November 9, a section of Harris Street will be closed off for the Sydney Streets on Harris Street festival as part of a City of Sydney initiative.

“They’re great days,” says Jim. “They raise awareness within the community and bring lots of people from outside.”

Pyrmont Cellars will have a pop-up stand on the day, offering free tastings and advice. And if the local physio decides to hold an ice-bath challenge again, Jim may just be on hand with a bottle of brandy.
