POSTNUPTIALS

POSTNUPTIALS

Making Priscilla seem positively prim is Postnuptials, a farcical feast of funnies from Californian writer David Earle enjoying its Australian premiere this February.

Home & Away’s Lyn Collingwood first outed the little-known play at a reading at the Toxteth Hotel a few years back, and producer Richard Cotter saw the potential for a fully mounted production.

Now in 2013, with ones-to-watch Vinnie Hooper (WAAPA), Robbie McGregor (the ‘voice’ of SBS), a host of NIDA grads and more stepping into the hot-stepping shoes of an ensemble cast, Postnuptials is ready for its big day. Following a disastrous wedding night for newlyweds Kevin and Lillian, the show is first and foremost a comedy, but it’s also not afraid to shoot past pure entertainment value for a little something more.

“There is, like the best comedies, something real and tangible and right and just about the predicament these characters find themselves in,” says Cotter.

“Love and sex and the whole damned thing is never clear cut and smooth. Otherwise it wouldn’t be exciting. And Postnuptials is definitely exciting. And it touches on the hot button subject of same sex marriage.”

It’s a ‘hot button’ that’s particularly relevant for at least one cast member.

“By a super bit of serendipity our cast includes rising star Tallay Wickham who is a rainbow baby born and raised by two mums.”

As they say, life is complicated, and that’s why we have Postnuptials.
