The Out & Loud & Proud Gala Concert at Sydney Town Hall was nothing short of spectacular. Ten choirs and 400 hundred singers from across Australia and overseas filled the stage with beautiful and poignant songs. They included familiar crowd pleasers and songs written especially for the occasion.

Along with our very own superb and familiar Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir were choirs from the likes of Brisbane, Canberra, Perth, Melbourne, Darwin and from as far as Japan, Timor-Leste and the United States. There were also singers whose own choirs could not come to Sydney but had formed their own international choir to perform at the town hall. All of this was charmingly held together by our host for the evening, Australian actor and singer Tim Draxl.

Any notions that choirs can be wobbly or out of tune were quickly dismissed by the delightful sounds flowing from the stage. It was a surprise to discover that the members of the choir from the United States had only met for the first time five days previously. As with all the choirs, they sounded flawless and as good as any professional singers who had performed together for years.

The audience was particularly moved by a Spanish language song performed by Lian Esparansa who hail from Timor-Leste. Another highlight was hearing Tim Draxl sing a Sondheim number with all 400 hundred singers on stage.

The concert lasted about three and a half hours, but the time flew. Those of us not performing on stage felt very much part of an enchanting and inclusive evening of songs and music. An unforgettable experience for both performers and attendees.
