MUSICAL: WEST SIDE STORY

MUSICAL: WEST SIDE STORY

The Australian production of Broadway hit West Side Story is vibrant, entertaining and highly energetic. Leonard Bernstein’s jazz-based music and Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics have captivated audiences since its debut in 1957 and this production, which opened on July 4 at Star City’s Lyric Theatre, is no exception. The international production was recast for the five-month Australian leg of the tour with Australian singers and dancers, under director/choreographer Joey McKneely. This modern-day take on Romeo and Juliet is full of memorable songs from its high-energy and infectious opening number When you’re a Jet to its tragic finale. Two gangs fight for turf in 1950s New York: the Jets led by Riff (Rohan Browne) and newly-arrived Puerto Ricans, the Sharks, led by Bernado (Nigel Turner-Carroll). The cast is excellent, especially the lovers Josh Piterman (Tony) and Julie Goodwin (Maria). Their love story is moving and her rich soprano and his wide vocal range do the songs credit. But Alinta Chidzey steals the spotlight as Bernardo’s girlfriend Anita. The number America, in which she leads the Puerto Rican women is a lusty song and dance, is memorable. Other hits include Tonight, I Feel Pretty and the witty Gee Officer Krupke!
