MUSIC: SURRY HILLS FESTIVAL

BY RHIANNON SAWYER

One thing that Sydney always manages to do well is an outdoor community festival, and this year’s Surry Hills Festival is shaping up to be another successful event. Over the last nine years the Surry Hills Festival has been used as a major fundraiser for the Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre and everyone is encouraged to make a gold coin donation to assist the Centre in its activities and service to the community. With the amazing line-up of performances, events, games and entertainment that the organisers of this year’s festival have managed to come up with you’d be hard pressed to find a reason not to offer a coin or two. With six stages set up during the day for over 20 acts on show, you won’t have a spare moment to stop and smell the roses between the amazing line-up of performances. Highlights include Bondi’s own Watussi who featured at last year’s festival as well as the Sydney festival (not to mention international and Australia wide touring over the last few years). This eight- piece band, once described as being ‘Rage Against The Machine with horns’ will be a major feature of the day’s entertainment. On a softer side, Kat Frankie and her evocative sweet melodies combined with a passionate roar of a voice will also headline the Green Stage. On a different note, dog lovers should also come prepared to present their primped pooches for the Dog Show Off. Another highlight of this year’s festival will be the fashion show which will exhibit the work of some of Sydney’s emerging designers so come along ready to spot Sydney’s next Akira or Sass and Bide.
