MISS JULIE

MISS JULIE

With its raw performances and dynamic staging Darlinghurst Theatre Company bare all on a bare stage in their innovative production of the August Strindberg classic, Miss Julie.

Set on the estate of a Swedish Count on Midsummer Eve, Miss Julie (Kate Box), the Count’s daughter, Jean (James Lugton), the Count’s most faithful attendant and Kristen, the cook (Sophie Gregg), enter a tragic and irreversible game.

Tackling the complex tragedy head on, the company have stripped back the play to highlight the psychological battle that individuals face in trying to fight their given societal roles.

The actors involved give fully committed performances of damaged and flawed individuals raging against the boundaries of class, gender and damaged upbringing.

With compelling use of props and music Miss Julie connects on a deeper level, creating an energetic and original adaptation that starts off slow and builds to an exhilarating finish. (SO)
