When cabaret/circus/disco revival show, Velvet, hit the stage of the Sydney Opera House in 2015, it exploded like a glitter bomb, leaving tiny, shiny pieces of joy and amazement on all who saw it. It now returns, revamped and rewired, with Australia’s own indisputable queen of disco reigning supreme once more.

Velvet Rewired sees Marcia Hines reprise her role as the Diva, belting out mirror-ball anthems and rocking gold sequins like only she can. Above and around her, is a troupe of incredibly talented singers, acrobats, circus performers and really gorgeous people, creating a show like nothing you’ve seen before.

Craig Ilott directed the original show in 2015 and returns for the rewired sequel. Also back for seconds are Craig Reid as the “Hula Boy” and Joe Accaria as the DJ and mix-master. New to the scene are Tom Sharah as “Country Mike”, Dutch skating duo Pierre and Stef The Skating Willers, aerialist Beau Sargent, aerialist Harley Timmermans, Jacinta Gulisano  and Sasha Lee Saunders as the “Sirens”.

The series of spectacular performances are loosely threaded together by the continuing narrative of a man discovering himself through his discovery of the world. It’s all underscored by a disco’s-greatest-hits soundtrack including “Ain’t No Body” (Chaka Khan and Rufus), “It’s Raining Men” (The Weather Girls) and “Born to Be Alive” (Patrick Hernandez).

If you really want to feel like a part of the show, you can join a workshop on November 19.  Dance Velvet Rewired is an afternoon dance class for wannabes 16 years and over, and features choreography from the Velvet Rewired.
