SYDNEY FRINGE: MACBETH A VARIETY SHOW BY DEFAULT

The audience are in their seats, the curtain is about to go up when the lead actor of Macbeth has been murdered. But, as the saying goes, the show must go on – even if it means staging a Shakespearean play that must resort to abandoning the script entirely and relying on the cast to create a variety show by default. I spoke with director Nick Hunter about this offbeat dark comedy. “We wanted to make a show that was different and unique,” he says. “This is not a new version of Macbeth. Instead it goes completely left of field which is fun.” Hunter along with writer Seaton Kay-Smith are influenced by British absurd comedy including Monty Python, The Mighty Boosh and Bill Bailey, and audiences can expect a surprising, quirky evening. “I love humour that goes somewhere completely different and unexpected. This show is entertainment full stop and is quite relatable. There’s something in if for everyone. It’s a play for people who want to go out and have a good night.”
