Letter to the editor: No gas confusion

Dear Editor,

There is no confusion about the City of Sydney’s view on Coal Seam Gas (CSG) drilling, which we made very clear in a Council resolution passed on 6 December 2010. The method used to extract coal seam methane, called fracking, is unacceptable because of its risks to the environment.

We are not interested in coal seam methane as an energy source for future trigeneration plants. We propose to use natural gas, which is already available in abundance in Australia. By 2030, we aim to develop renewable gases. Coal seam methane is not a renewable gas.

Yours sincerely,

Clover Moore MP

Lord Mayor
