Interactive exhibition honours 50 years of the Sydney Opera House
Museum of Sydney’s The Peoples House: Sydney Opera House at 50 exhibition celebrates five-decades of history at the iconic Australian landmark.
The Museum of History NSW in collaboration with the Sydney Opera House provides visitors the opportunity to explore the buildings history of Australian arts and culture. Featuring archived costumes and imagery, along with modern sculptures and interactive displays, the free exhibition honours the building’s architectural mastery and decades of events held at the venue.
CEO of Museums of History NSW (MHNSW) Mary Darwell expresses the popularity of the exhibition has extended its tenor till March next year.
“We are thrilled to be able to extend the exhibition date so that more people can explore and celebrate five decades of the Sydney Opera House as an extraordinary and much-loved cultural icon,” says Darwell.
“In a first for MHNSW, The People’s House brings material and memorabilia from our collection together with the collections of the NSW cultural institutions, the Opera House’s resident companies and the Arts Centre Melbourne, who have generously contributed significant items to help bring this exhibition to life,” Darwell continues.
Visitors can marvel at the playful Lego model of the Opera House, whilst being surrounded by archival records, posters, set boxes, architectural drawings, and classic souvenirs from the past fifty years. You can also test your drawing skills at their digital drafting table, and conduct a virtual orchestra in the Maestro virtual performance space.
The exhibition also features a commissioned piece by First Nations master weavers Steven Russell and Phyllis Stewart. The piece responds to the iconic 2002 Shellwork art from renowned First Nations artist, Esme Timbery, depicting the Sydney Opera House.
