IN THE NEXT ROOM OR THE VIBRATOR PLAY

IN THE NEXT ROOM OR THE VIBRATOR PLAY

In The Next Room or the vibrator play, is a piece that is summed up by its title. It’s a play about vibrators … medicinal vibrators, to be precise. This comedy, set in the prude and polite Victorian era, explores the practice of treating women for ‘hysteria’ with vibrators. It’s part comedy, part melodrama and part saucy exploration. Written by award-winning US playwright, Sarah Ruhl, the play was a Broadway success and has the makings of a hit. Depending on taste, it will either live up to its potential or disappoint. The action is driven mostly by sexual innuendo and gags, which show just how far our view of sex has moved forward. It’s a look at the way we were and the silly things we did. Some will laugh along and take pleasure in the historical joy-ride and others might find it a tad underwhelming. Directed by Pamela Rabe, the lively cast embraces their Victorian counter-parts well. An elegant set is a delightful and clever example of the period’s relationship with technology. The play suffered slightly from poor comic timing at points but is nonetheless worth seeing for those who are interested in history and vibrators!
