The inaugural SXSW Sydney last year was such a huge success it’s hard to imagine it could get any bigger or better, but it looks like the 2024 festival is going to be both. The organisers have just released the program of free public events that will run alongside the main conference, and it is definitely worth blocking out that week in your diary.

For seven solid days and nights, Tumbalong Park in Darling Harbour will be a walk-through wonderland of activations, talks, performances, games and more.

SXSW (South by Southwest) is one of the world’s largest and most unique arts, culture and ideas festivals. It began in Austin, Texas in the late ‘80s, expanding progressively each year to include more disciplines and events. People fly from all over the world to attend; it’s like the Olympics of arts and cultural festivals.

SXSW Sydney 2023 was the very first SXSW to take place outside the USA and the attendance and feedback was extremely positive.

This year’s program has been built around the festival’s core pillars: Tech & Innovation, Games, Music and Screen. The Main Stage and The Dome will be the focal points for performances, demonstrations and talks.

+91 Calling brings the spicy sounds of India to Tumbalong Park for one whole day. Hear six exciting Indian acts perform hip-hop, pop, r&b, club and neo-classical music.

Ben Gillies (musician, songwriter and Silverchair co-founder) teams up with Johannes Saam (futurist and creative technologist) and Tushar Apte (producer and songwriter) for an extraordinary music/technology jam.

Surf and nostalgia lovers should make sure they’re in the park for a special 60th anniversary screening of cult classic surf film, The Endless Summer. Stick around afterwards for live sounds from BALTHVS & Touch Sensitive.

For something more homegrown, see a free screening of Bush Shorts, a selection of First Nations and Indigenous short films.

Meanwhile, in The Dome, be part of the audience for the Meet The Speaker sessions featuring many of the conference speakers including popular Australian astrophysicist and science communicator, Kirsten Banks.

Also in The Dome will be a display of the ZERO Australian 100% electric bikes, featuring the prototype ZERO SR/X.

As part of the free Games Festival programming, the Acer Predator League Academy will be crowning their first champion at Tumbalong Park. Two of the best high schools in Australia and New Zealand will compete in the only Fortnite competition designed for high schools. In huge news for the gaming community, Team PWR and Fortnite icons Lachlan and Loserfruit will be onstage to provide the winning school with their trophy.
