This December, an exhibition inspired by the experiences of Chinese youth is coming to Chippendale.

White Rabbit Gallery presents the “Gen Xi” exhibition, featuring 40 emerging Chinese artists born in the 1990s and 2000s.

Nicknamed the “lucky generation”, China’s youth have grown up in an increasingly affluent, urban, and digitally connected China. They have grown up in a period of unprecedented transformation amidst the rise of artificial intelligence and the digital connection of social media.

Chinese Youth are the first to experience the possibilities, but also the contradictions and uncertainty of “New China”. Rising living costs, plummeting birth rates, difficult job prospects, and the pressures of home ownership have complicated the traditional path towards Adulthood.

This exhibition acts as an ode to this new generation. Titled “Gen Xi”, the name reflects the individuality and adaptability of the new generation shaping its own future. The artworks will help young Aussies see parallels between themselves and the experiences of their East Asian counterparts.

Voices of the New Generation

White Rabbit Gallery Founder and Director Dr Judith Neilson AM said: “I am thrilled to introduce Australian audiences to this emerging generation of artists, most of whom have never been exhibited here before.”

“Discovering their distinctive practices—and their bold, continual experimentation with new media and ideas—has been deeply refreshing. I hope audiences find as much enjoyment in these works as I have.”

As an artist born in 2003, Shen Tongzhou points out that generations born after 2013 experience technology as a whole. His featured art reflects his memories of the digital age scaffolding rather than just taking it for granted.

“I have witnessed a relatively complete history of its evolution.”

The exhibition also features other notable voices of this new Chinese art scene. The works of Guo Yuheng, known as virtual avatars SKIRUA and An An, as well as LazyBackHome, illustrate how online gaming and subcultures have heavily influenced this generation.

The White Rabbit Gallery was established in 2009 to share Judith Neilson’s private collection of 21st-century Chinese art with the public. Curated by David Williams, “Gen Xi“ is the 34th exhibition in the Gallery. It is a registered charitable institution funded solely by Judith Neilson.
