GREAT EXPECTATIONS
Great Expectations is a story about loss, deception and identity. It features one of Dickens’ most haunting and iconic characters, the deserted bride, Miss Havisham. It is fitting, therefore, that the bAKEHOUSE Theatre Company’s production features actors from the inner west, which in urban myth is the home of the original Miss Havisham, Eliza Donnithorne from Newtown.
Great Expectations, the novel, is immense in scale, convoluted in plot and populated by eccentric, exaggerated and eerie Victorians. In this production, borrowed from the Royal Shakespeare Company, London, bAKEHOUSE uses the cast as characters, commentators and chorus. Backed by a simplistic set, the complicated Dickensian circus becomes a tale that resonates with 21st Century audiences.
On the foggy moors of England and in the bustling filth 19th Century London, Magwitch, Joe Gargery, and Pip live again. Combining a traditional story with the expertise of the atyp, Great Expectations at the Wharf Theatre promises to be a night of charm, wit and poignancy.
