GAMES IN THE BACKYARD

Games in the Backyard by Israeli playwright Edna Mazya and directed by Netta Yashchin deals with the rape of a 14-year-old girl by a group of four 17-year-old boys. Inspired by a true case that took place in an Israeli kibbutz and shook the nation, Mazya’s play examines the power dynamics, flirtations and manipulation between teenagers which ultimately led to a brutal violation. This violation continues in the courtroom scenes with the defence lawyers of the accused boys viciously questioning the victim. The actors playing both the teenage youths and the lawyers transition seamlessly between the divergent roles and are able to show the blurry boundaries between flirtation and consent. Jessica Palyga is particularly convincing in the harrowing role of Dvori. The use of chaotic music and harsh lighting create tense and emotionally charged scenes. Although not suitable for people under 15, this Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) production confidently tackles a hard and important issue that is rarely discussed. This play provides interesting viewing for an age group where alcohol and sexuality often mix with sometimes disastrous results.
